Christian V. Bernau

CFO & Chairman of the UAE parent and Africa OpCo boards

Christian Victor Bernau is a private-equity investor, company director and board-level financial strategist with over three decades of experience across investment management, capital raising and portfolio governance in Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2011, Christian founded Spear Capital, a Scandinavian-backed private equity firm that raised USD 65m in growth capital, deploying it across African consumer, manufacturing, financial-services and technology-related businesses. He has since extended this track record as Portfolio Manager and Partner at Savara Capital, where he oversees portfolio performance, capital allocation, and acquisition and exit strategy across a multi-jurisdiction platform spanning Zimbabwe, South Africa and the USA.

His board mandates — including Non-Executive Director roles at Dendairy (Zimbabwe), Polymeric (USA, UK and Ireland) and JinCom (South Africa), alongside earlier directorships in Norway — reflect a career built on rigorous investment assessment, disciplined capital stewardship and hands-on governance. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Finance from Old Dominion University and a Master's degree in International Business from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH).

At Smart X, Christian serves as CFO and Chairman of the UAE parent and Africa OpCo boards, leading financial governance and capital planning: building the financial models, investor-return frameworks and budget structures that underpin the company's deployment and expansion strategy, and ensuring every decision is grounded in disciplined financial analysis and transparent board oversight.

Leadership Story

Building the financial discipline required to turn technology into infrastructure.

Water infrastructure is capital-intensive, operationally demanding and unforgiving of weak assumptions. A technically strong system can still fail if funding, cash flow, controls and governance are not designed with equal discipline.

As CFO and Chairman of the UAE parent and Africa OpCo boards, Christian is responsible for building that financial foundation and connecting it directly to Smart X deployment decisions.

01

Financial architecture, not only accounting

Christian’s mandate extends beyond recording what has already happened. He helps structure how Smart X plans capital, evaluates commitments and understands the financial consequences of each deployment stage.

The objective is a decision system in which budgets, cash requirements, contractual obligations and operating assumptions are visible before the company commits resources.

02

Governance at board level

As Chairman of the UAE parent and Africa OpCo boards, Christian connects financial execution with the board’s responsibility for oversight, risk and strategic control.

That includes challenging assumptions, improving the quality of reporting and ensuring that capital decisions are measured against defined milestones rather than optimism alone.

03

Financing Water as a Service

Water as a Service changes the financial model from a one-time equipment sale to an operating relationship over time. Capital expenditure, consumables, service capacity, revenue timing and working capital must be understood as one system.

Christian’s role is to help make that model financially resilient and repeatable, so that continued performance remains viable for Smart X and credible for customers, partners and investors.

04

Control before scale

Regional expansion multiplies transactions, currencies, contracts and reporting responsibilities. Without controls established early, growth can hide risk rather than create value.

Christian works with the finance team and company leadership to build the governance, reporting and capital discipline required before Smart X expands its operating footprint.
